When I purchased this kindle edition off of amazon.com, this book had received a perfect 5 star score. I was so excited to start reading it, after having read all positive raving reviews that I stayed up late into the wee hours of the following day getting into it. Now, I'm really not an avid reader. I'm a single mom of a 3 yr old that pretty much consumes every minute, thought and breath I have, all day, everyday. So, if I'm going to stay up late reading? It better be an amazing psychological thriller, or crime, high drama, fast moving and exciting book...that teaches me something....or, at the very least, stimulates me enough, to walk away pondering a noton. And according to the reviews, this book delivered just that, and that's why I bought this book.

#1 rule....everybody likes something different....do not go in with high expectations. When I can remember this 1 rule I have towards purchasing books, I'm golden, however, in this case, I did not. This is a good book. Leo's style of writing is uncomplicated and interesting...but I'm one of those people that "gets the gist" and needs you "to move on"...quickly. Through most of this book I felt a little irritated at having read the same thing over, and over, and over, and sometimes just reworded, but delivering the same message. For me, the last chapter had a message to ponder, which I enjoyed, but I'm left feeling flat....and I can't say that it would be the first book rolling off my tongue to suggest others to read, yet, it wasn't a complete waste of my time either. Had I gone into this with less expectations, it might have been better, and because of this I gave this 4 stars instead of 3.

Trusting Evil edition by Mary Leo Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Starting a book with a suicidal character from the outset can be difficult, but Ms. Leo pulls it off. Carly Rockett's sarcasm and her ever-loving supporter Mike form an interesting duo, who play well off of one another. Their interaction allows you to want to cheer for Carly and urge her to enjoy life. The story's premise is based on the horrific murder of eight nurses by a German sailor, Richard Speck. I remember the tragedy very well and the sensation it caused at the time. It never occurred to me to consider the crime's effect on the neighboring community. When she was a Beatle-crazed teenager, Carly met and spoke to Richard Speck. She and her friends reasoned that since he was from Germany and the Beatles played in Hamburg, Richard would have an inside track to deliver their love letters. As an adult Carly investigates Richard Speck's almost luxurious life in prison, it may lead one to reconsider the death penalty and the treatment of prisoners.
I have just finished reading "Trusting Evil" by Mary Leo. I'm an avid reader and this book is one I shall never forget. From the first page I was hooked.

The author, Mary Leo, lived and grew up in the South Chicago area. She was a young girl when the news broke that eight student nurses had been brutally murdered, in her neighborhood! If you are old enough to remember the brutal slayings of these eight young women, you will identify with the books heroine--Carly Rockett. Even though I was a young girl living in Virginia when these savage murders took place, I can remember the fear that swept our nation before the killer was caught.

Trusting Evil is a unique book because it is well written and filled with the ideals of young, trusting, fun loving, teenagers. Carly Rockett and her two best friends are totally in love with The Beatles. Each one innocently and sincerely believes that they will one day marry their band idols. The world that they inhabit feels serene and safe to everyone around them. That is--until evil incarnate arrives in their town. His name is Richard Speck and he walks among them.

This book took me back to the 60's. The author captured that "innocent" time in our nation's history. Then, all of the innocence is shattered when such a savage and brutal killer crept into the Student Nurses townhouse on the night of July 13, 1966. The horror of his crimes would reverberate not only through Chicago--but throughout the world.

This is a book that weaves true crime and historical fiction together to tell a unique tale of one young girls guilt. It is "survivors guilt." Carly Rockett had witnessed things that she felt--in retrospect--may have helped save the nurses had she had the courage to tell someone.

I gave this book 5 stars because of it's ability to make me feel that I was there right along with the protagonist when she was younger. I couldn't identify with her older self as much--but that didn't take anything away from the book. Carly Rockett is a character I won't soon forget. She confronted her demons and took us all along with her as she did so. It was such a compelling read. I look forward to reading more books by Mary Leo in the future.
A most remarkable, well-written book. Mary Leo has constructed a unique example of one-of-its-kind historical fiction based on actual horrendous murders of extraordinary evil, coupled with a woman's own unknowing proximity to the crime two decades earlier. The flashbacks of story lines, including re-creations of the agony of the victims, certainly are not pleasant, actually shocking, and perhaps not for the weak, as it is freighting to realize how close one comes to trusting someone who truly has evil intentions. This story demolishes any theory, as is frequently heard today, that all fellow humans are inherently good. Because most people never enter the world of evil, never get near a crime scene, or step into prisons - and learn why inmates are there - this story should make any reader realize that indeed there is evil and, moreover, that trusting, or ignoring evil is a serious mistake for the unrealistic thinker and proponent of the politics that good intentions are enough. It is a unique tale, based on terrifying facts. It achieves a new level of historical fiction and is an exploration of a terrible crime from a bystander's point of view after being confronted by inexplicable evil.
